What is the Izu Peninsula Geoguide Association?

Our association's members are certified geoguides who have completed the geoguide training course conducted by the Beautiful Izu Creation Center Geopark Promotion Department and passed the certification exam, as well as those who are recognized as equivalent by the association. We will guide you with our knowledge. Additionally, some of the individual guides have specialized knowledge and skills, allowing you to experience the Izu Peninsula Geopark more deeply.

The number of regular members in 2023 is 111, covering 15 cities and towns on the Izu Peninsula. Geoguides in each region are like interpreters who guide you through the origins and views of local geopoints (valuable landforms and geology), and also introduce the unique nature, culture, and beliefs of that region.

About Geopark

Geopark

A geopark is a "park" rich in nature that contains various natural heritage sites related to the Earth, such as strata, rocks, topography, volcanoes, and faults. It is a place where you can look closely at the mountains and rivers, notice their origins, and think about their connections to ecosystems and people's lives. From the rocks under your feet to the universe above your head, from billions of years in the past to the future, you can think about the natural world of the seas and mountains, as well as the creatures and people who live there. In other words, a geopark is a place where you can think about the Earth as a whole.

Izu Peninsula Geopark

The Izu Peninsula, the only part of Honshu that sits on the Philippine Sea Plate, was once a collection of volcanic islands and undersea volcanoes in the South Seas. It was formed when the plate collided with Honshu, causing repeated volcanic activity as it moved north.

The peninsula is still experiencing volcanic activity and crustal movement, which has created an attractive peninsula with rich hot springs, the deepest Suruga Bay in Japan, and a diverse topography.

The Izu Peninsula allows visitors to learn about the earth's activities throughout the ages, from the time of undersea volcanoes and volcanic islands, through the major event of its collision with Honshu, to the volcanic activity and crustal movement that continues to this day, and to enjoy the blessings of the land.

The main theme of the Izu Peninsula Geopark is "A gift from the south volcano."

The Izu Peninsula Geopark was certified as one of the Japanese Geoparks by the Japan Geoparks Network in September 2014. The Japan Geoparks Network is made up of local organizations that have been certified as Japanese Geoparks or are aiming to be certified. It promotes Japanese Geopark activities and operates under the umbrella of the Global Geoparks Network. As of April 2018, 43 areas across Japan have been recognized as Japanese Geoparks. In April 2018, Izu Peninsula Geopark was recognized as the ninth UNESCO Global Geopark in Japan.
